Smoky quartz is the national gem of Scotland. The Druids called it a stone of power.

Product Highlights:

  • The Stone: Millions of years of history. Smoky quartz gets its color from natural radiation deep in the earth. Trace uranium and thorium in surrounding rock slowly alter the crystal structure of clear quartz over geological time, turning it smoky brown to near black. Each bead is translucent, catching and holding light rather than reflecting it. Set with three ornate vermeil gold beads and a vermeil gold logo tube.
  • History: The Celts began mining smoky quartz in the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish Highlands around 300 BC. They called the darker stones Morion and the lighter ones Cairngorm. The Druids considered it sacred, a stone that represented the dark power of Earth gods, and used it in ceremonies and rituals. Scottish Highlanders set it into their kilt pins, shoulder brooches, and the handle of their sgian-dubh, the small blade worn with the kilt. The Scottish royal scepter, gifted by Pope Alexander VI to King James IV in 1494, is topped with a sphere of smoky quartz. Queen Victoria kept a collection of Cairngorm crystals at Balmoral Castle. The Romans carved it into intaglio seals. The Chinese cut it into flat panes and used them as the earliest sunglasses, worn by court judges to hide their expressions while interrogating witnesses.
  • The Belief: In modern crystal practice, smoky quartz is a root chakra stone, associated with grounding, stress relief, and absorbing negative energy. In ancient Celtic tradition, it was believed to guide souls to the afterlife. This stone has been carried by druids, warriors, and kings for the same reason: it grounds you when things get dark.
  • Vermeil Gold: The gold elements are crafted from heavy vermeil. This is a solid sterling silver base coated in 3.5 microns of pure 24kt gold, making it about seven times thicker than standard gold plating. Because we use pure 24kt gold over silver instead of a thin layer over brass, the color is richer and highly durable. If it wears over time, it reveals solid silver beneath, developing character rather than looking cheap. Vermeil has been the standard for premium jewelry since 18th century France.

Our pieces are made with natural gemstones; slight variations in color, size, and pattern may occur.
